Safe Zone Training

This interactive workshop, hosted by the Office of IDEAL’s Gender and Sexuality Inclusion Center, helps participants build the knowledge and skills to support a more inclusive campus community and advocate for LGBTQIA+ inclusion.

Participants will learn key terminology, explore important moments in LGBTQIA+ history, review campus and community resources, and develop skills in allyship and bystander intervention to effectively respond to social injustices.

After successfully completing Safe Zone, participants are considered an Advocate and provided with a removable decal sticker. The title of Advocate indicates a fundamental understanding of LGBTQIA+ identities and a commitment to working toward gender and sexuality inclusion.

Safe Zone Overview

Safe Zone is an interactive LGBTQIA+ inclusion workshop that lasts 2.5 hours for staff and faculty and 2 hours for students. It fosters dialogue on gender and sexuality while covering key terms, history, intersectionality, and strategies for advocacy and inclusion.

The workshop is free, voluntary, and open to all Temple University community members. Participants receive a sticker or decal upon completion, and the training is required for units seeking Safe Space Initiative certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

We encourage staff and faculty with questions about the Safe Zone to review the information below. If you have additional questions that are not addressed, please contact ideal@temple.edu.

Q | What is the difference between Safe Zone and the Safe Space initiative

It’s important to note the distinction between these two designations:

  • Safe Zone Certification recognizes individuals who complete the 2.5-hour foundational training.

  • Safe Space Certification recognizes entire units that have met the 85% training requirement and demonstrated sustained commitment to inclusive practices.

Certified Safe Spaces may display an official Safe Space plaque within their unit. The plaque is available at a nominal cost, which can be JETTED to the Office of IDEAL’s FOAPL account. We will also provide a digital banner for websites.

Safe Space certifications are renewed annually to ensure participating units continue to meet the 85% training requirement.
